Economic indicators

The CPI (Consumer Price Index) in São Paulo accumulated high of 6.16% in 2008 against 4.38% recorded a year earlier. The price category that recorded the biggest high was the food, which accumulated in the past year an increase of 9.01% - even so, the variation was lower than that seen in 2007, when the high was 12.73% . In the last week of December, the index recorded increases of 0.16%, below the 0.21% seen a week earlier. The data was released this Tuesday by Fipe (Foundation Institute of Economic Research).

In the last week of December, food prices showed deflation of 0.54%, followed by a deflation of 0.18% in the week immediately preceding.

The Housing category, however, increased significantly: the high accumulated in 2007 was 0.28%, last year, prices in this category accumulated high 5.39%. In the last week of last month, there were increases of 0.23%, 0.15% above the week immediately preceding.

Category Transportation accumulated high 3.34% last year, against 2.87% in 2007. In the last week of December, the index recorded an increase of 0.18%, below the 0.28% seen in the week immediately preceding. Personal expenses in the category, the high accumulated in 2008 was 7.65% against 4.14% a year earlier. The weekly index showed an improvement of 0.88%, above the 0.76% recorded a year earlier.

Prices in the category Health reported significant reduction in the last week of December, showing slight positive variation of 0.04%, below the 0.20% seen a week earlier. Last year, prices in this category accumulated high 6.42% from 5.71% a year earlier.

In the category Clothing, prices rose 1.22% in the last weekly measurement of last year, against 0.93% a week earlier. Last year, the indicator accumulated high 4.41%, against a deflation of 0.55% in 2007. In the Education category, prices were high of 0.08% in the last week of December, from variation of 0.09% a week earlier. In 2008, the accumulated high-class of 5.31% against 4.22% recorded high in 2007.
